Chimney Relining

Black Knight Energy has been relining chimneys since the late 1970s. Today’s liners and methods are much more refined and professional, verses those earlier days. Today there are literally hundreds of choices in liners, grades of stainless, thickness, and available accessories.

Not a week goes by that a stainless manufacturer or salesman does not call claiming to have the best metal for the lowest price.

What is the best stainless liner?  Today that is more confusing than ever with everyone claiming to be the best.  Every home and every application is different.  There is no one liner that fits all!

Black Knight Energy selects the proper liner for each home in the following manner:

  • The liner must be UL listed and approved.  (There are many liners out there that are tested but not listed!)
  • The manufacturer must back up their product.  (Should a warranty issue arise we expect our wholesaler to stand behind their product)
  • Size of the liner, grade of stainless and application play a role in liner selection.

Chimney MixGolden Flue: Poured In Place Liners

Golden Flue liners are used primarily for lining open fireplaces by Black Knight Energy, Inc.

European countries are far more advanced and ahead of the United States when it comes to energy savings. For 60 years European countries have been lining their chimneys via the cast in place or poured chimney liners.

Black Knight Energy, owner and President Robert L. Purvis, Jr. researched and studied different cast liner systems before settling for Golden Flue.

Reasons for selecting Golden Flue are as follows:

  1. Golden Flue is the only cast lining system UL listed and approved.
  2. Golden Flue is rated at zero clearance by Warnock Hershey with just one inch of lining material.
  3. Golden Flue manufacturers and supplies state of the art equipment to its dealers.
  4. Golden Flue does not just sell mix and equipment; they actually do chimney liners and understand the work involved and details of properly lining a chimney flue.
    1. Golden Flue chimney liners are pumped into the chimney around a heavy rubber form.
    2. Heavy rubber form does not compress or crush from weight of mix. Maintaining the same size at the bottom of the chimney and the top.
    3. Golden Flue liners add strength and integrity to your chimney, adding many years of life to it.
    4. Golden Flue liners are impervious to acids and can handle the venting of any fuel.

Golden Flue Installation: Appropriate sized bladder is inserted down flue into smoke chamber. Smoke chamber and smoke shelf area is pumped full of Golden Flue mix under 800lbs of hydraulic pressure. This forces mix into all the cracks, voids, and missing mortar joints providing a safe lining system for Golden Flue Mixall smoke chamber areas plus providing a UL listed repair to smoke chamber and smoke shelf area. Unlike parging smoke chambers for stainless steel liner systems where material is troweled over existing bricks.

Golden Flue poured in place liners are the best lining system available today for repairs to any masonry chimney when strength and integrity to the structure is requested. Golden Flue liners allow you to burn any fuel from gas, oil, wood, or coal. Golden Flue liners are for masonry repairs that meet all of today’s standards and code requirements.

Stainless Steel Liners

Briefly Black Knight Energy, Inc. used the following grades of stainless liners for these applications.

-Grade 304 heavy wall for all wood burning applications. Grade 304 stainless is UL listed to handle the hydrochloric acids formed by wood burning appliances.

-Grade 316 heavy wall liners for coal burning appliances. Grade 316 stainless is made to handle the sulfuric acids produced by coal burning appliances.

-Grade 316 tri-alloy stainless. Lighter gauge stainless designed to handle combustion gases produced by oil and gas burning appliances.

-Grade AL29-4C stainless. Single wall light gauge stainless. Black Knight uses this grade of stainless for gas burning appliances only.

Note: All the above liners must be insulated with a UL listed and approved insulation material to meet UL requirements.

What’s the difference between heavy wall and light gauge? Heavy wall liners are four or more layers of stainless creating a heavy durable liner. Black Knight uses all heavy wall liners for wood and coal burning applications.

Light gauge or single wall liners: These are single layers of stainless much lighter than the heavy wall types. These liners are used for oil and gas appliances where the high temperatures of a possible chimney fire are not prevalent by Black Knight Energy, Inc.

Chimney liners for open fireplaces: Black Knight Energy, Inc. does not line open fireplaces with stainless steel nor do we suggest it. Our reason for not lining open fireplaces with stainless is safety concerns and issues with the smoke chamber and smoke shelf area. For details see Poured in Place Liners.
